Sweetmeat dish with an Antique Motif

Okumura Kajo (mentioned on object), c. 1925 - c. 1935

The dented and warped dish is intended to give the impression of an antique metal object. The core is made of sheets of hemp cloth soaked in lacquer and hardened over a mould. Any desired shape could be made with this dry lacquer technique. The interest in motifs and shapes from the distant past is one of the characteristics of Japanese modernity around 1930.
