Study of a Torso

Perino del Vaga, c. 1534

According to old sources, Perino del Vaga often copied the work of Michelangelo (1475-1564) but used the soft drawing style of his teacher, Raphael (1483-1520). This is clear to see here: the elegantly drawn torso is based on Michelangelo’s famous statue of David. The arm and hand resemble those of Adam in the Creation of Adam on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome.
