Study of a Married Couple

Lorenzo Lotto, c. 1520 - c. 1525

Lorenzo Lotto made this swiftly executed sketch preparatory to a painted double portrait, which is now in St Petersburg. He squared the composition for transfer to the canvas. Such working drawings were seldom preserved. This is regrettable, because it is precisely the clothing and attributes chosen by the patrons at this early stage that reveal how they wished to be immortalized.
