Study of Tree Trunks and Roots

Roelant Savery, c. 1606 - c. 1607

Joachim von Sandrart, Savery’s biographer, writes about large trees that the artist drew mit Kohle – in charcoal – in the Tyrol. This is just such a study of trees, indeed drawn in charcoal, which he first soaked in linseed oil. The linseed oil gives the strokes a more saturated black-brown colour, and the pigment adheres better to the paper.
