Study of a tree trunk with roots

Jacques de Gheyn II (1565-1629), pen and dark brown ink, brush and dark brown wash, and black chalk on cartridge paper, c. 1600-1605

De Gheyn was fascinated by this tree’s fanciful structure and growth process. He studied it very closely, minutely rendering every split, burr, and twist.
