Studies of Plants and Grasses

Charles Gattiker, c. 1883 - c. 1884

Because photographs were largely considered to be mere aids in the 19th century, the name of the photographer was generally not mentioned. The name on the mounts of these photographs is that of the publisher, the Paris firm of Calavas. From around 1875 it published vast amounts of photographs that were widely used as study material by artists.
