De tekening is vermoedelijk een voorstudie voor een deel van de voorstelling op het linkerpaneel van de Gouden Koets. Dit is het paneel waarop het eerbetoon aan koningin Wilhelmina van de toenmalige koloniën Oost- en West-Indië is geschilderd. Het betreft het deel waar een man knielt voor de Nederlandse Maagd naast verschillende producten uit de toenmalige koloniën. Volgens het inventarisboek is de man rechts op de tekening een Javaan.
