Street Scene

Leon Levinstein (mentioned on object), c. 1965

Leon Levinstein belonged to the canon of photographers who discovered the street as their subject matter in the 1950s and 60s. He was not so much interested in individuals with a name or a story, but rather their poses, facial expressions, and the ‘convergence’ of various people in a single image. The four people in this photograph will never have known that for a split second they were the actors in a photograph portraying the hustle and bustle of a city like New York.
