Explanatory note

  • Ondanks dat het schilderij 1872 gedateerd is is het schilderij mogelijk eerder gemaakt: Courbet zat in 1871 zes maanden lang in de gevangenis en maakte in die tijd veel stillevens van appels (de Leeuw 2000). In 1872 stuurde Courbet dit schilderij naar de Salon op, maar werd afgewezen (Vergeest).
