Stacking Boxes

This pair of stacking boxes is exceedingly finely incised with figures in a detailed landscape. The boxes’ almost transparent carving indicates that they did not serve a utilitarian, but rather a decorative purpose. Due to global trade, Canton became the most important centre for processing and selling ivory. This type of openwork ivory ranks among the most costly souvenirs one could buy in Canton.

    Stapeldoos, bestaande uit twee gestapelde bakken, een deksel en een hengsel. De wanden van de bakken en het deksel bestaan steeds uit acht opengewerkte panelen met voorstellingen van Chinezen bij veel verschillende uithuizige bezigheden, gevat in met eenvoudiger motieven gedecoreerde ribben; het hengsel is gedecoreerd met draken in reliëf. Op de voet een fraaie band van bloemtakken met vleermuizen. De dekselknop bestaat uit verschillende vruchten en bloemen.
