St Sebastian

attributed to Pietro Tacca, c. 1610 - c. 1615

All traces of the arrows that, according to legend, pierced the martyr Sebastian are missing here. The drama of this scultpre is concentrated entirely in the pose of the sensual, idealized nude body. The tormented Sebastian has lost consciousness and hangs limply against the trunk of the tree to which he is bound by one wrist.

    Sebastiaan hangt met de rechterpols gebonden aan een naar boven stekende, afgeknotte tak van een eveneens afgeknotte boomstam. Het hoofd hangt naar rechts opzij, de linkerarm is op de rug aan de boomstam gebonden. Het gebogen rechterbeen steunt met de tenen tegen een lage boomstronk, het wat minder gebogen been hangt met de tenen tegen de grond. St. Sebastiaan draagt een baardje en snor. Hij heeft voor de schaamte een door een band opgehouden doek.
