Spaziergänger (Promenaders)

Lyonel Feininger (signed by artist), 1918

Figures strolling along the street were a recurring motif in the work of Feininger, who directed the Bauhaus printmaking workshop. On the right of this woodcut, two figures extend across the full height of the sheet. To the left is a smaller figure with hat. In the background a classical viaduct can be discerned. People, architecture and landscape are here rolled into one. Feininger referred to his style as ‘Prisma-ismus’.
