Somaskanda

The term Somaskanda refers to Shiva and means ‘with Uma and Skanda’. In this particular representation, Shiva and Uma sit on a rectangular pedestal, with the child Skanda standing between them. This representation developed in Southeast India and was particularly popular during the 10th–13th centuries. On feast days these images were carried in procession around the city.

Description
De compositie bestaat uit drie figuren geplaatst op een voetstuk. De vierarmige Siva zit in de zogenaamde lalita-asana-houding (waarbij het ene been naar beneden hangt). Zijn rechter voorarm laat het gebaar van de geruststelling (abhaya-mudra) zien; de linker voorarm is in de kataka-mudra. De andere twee armen houden een bijl (rechts) en een hert (links), bekende attributen van Siva in Zuid-India. De god is vergezeld door zijn echtgenote Uma (Parvati), ook zittend afgebeeld, en zijn zoon Skanda, hier afgebeeld als een klein kind staande tussen zijn ouders.
