Sketch for the Volkswagen Transporter

anonymous, in or after 1947-04-23

After the Second World War, the British military command took on the administration of the German Volkswagen company. Ben Pon wanted to become the importer for this car make for the Netherlands. In the factory he saw a transport cart that inspired him to design a new type of lightweight lorry. His sketch formed the basis for the Transporter. The ‘Volkwagen Van’ became a symbol of reconstruction and freedom.
