anonymous, 1700 - 1800

The screen features a nocturnal moonlit scene. A nobleman plays the koto, a Japanese zither with 11 strings, for a lady-in-waiting. This is a scene from Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji), an 11th-century novel recounting Prince Genji’s romantic escapades.
