Sirih box
anonymous, c. 1700 - c. 1799
Two sirih boxes. Silver. Batavia (?), c. 1770 - 1790. A quid of sirih (betel) comprises areca nut, gambir and lime wrapped in a betel leaf. Chewing sirih was popular throughout Southeast Asia. Purchased from Stichting Cultuurgeschiedenis Nederlanders Overzee.
