Silver cabinet

Jan Adolf Hillebrand (1818–1887), Leeuwarden, 1844, various woods, ivory, mirror glass

The young cabinetmaker Jan Hillebrand displayed this Gothic Revival cabinet as a showpiece at the 1844 exhibition of decorative arts in Leeuwarden. His ambition was rewarded, for the cabinet was purchased by King William II, a fan of the Gothic Revival style. Gothic elements are combined in the piece, such as the fine wood tracery over the mirror glass and the decorative spires.
