Siamese Riverscape with a Funeral Procession

Adolf van der Laan (mentioned on object), 1730

The processions accompanying a funeral were among the special features of the Siamese religion. People believed in reincarnation. The grander the funeral, the better the deceased would start his or her next life. This image combines a European-looking gate with Siamese motifs, including boats, houses, an elephant and people in Asian clothing.
