Siamese Landscape with People

Adolf van der Laan (mentioned on object), 1730

Clearly different motifs from earlier prints have here been combined to create a new scene. The elephant and the nobleman with the crouching enslaved man come from one travel account, while the woman and children are taken from another journal. The depiction of a nobleman and his family with an enslaved man affords a glimpse of the hierarchical structure of Siamese society
