Set of Bowls

Tanaka Ikka (1864-1924), Japan, c. 1900-1920, wood, lacquer

Ikka decorated the bowls and lids of this set with wellknown combinations of motifs from Japanese art, such as a goose with autumn grasses, irises with the bridges of Yatsuhashi, or a horse with a gourd. The latter pair is a reference to Chokaro, an immortal who on command could make a magic horse appear from his gourd.
