Self-portrait
Robert Mapplethorpe, 1980
In 1980, Mapplethorpe produced two self-portraits in which he drew attention to the rigid distinction in a male or female identity. In both portraits, Mapplethorpe depicted himself from head to shoulders and is looking directly at us onlookers. Here he disguised himself as an archetypical bad boy, dressed in a black leather jacket with a cigarette nonchalantly hanging out of his mouth.
