Self-Portrait
Thérèse Schwartze, before 1888
When Schwartze made this self-portrait, she was regularly working in Paris, pursuing an international career. She began using pastels, which enabled her to work faster and create softer contours. This is reflected in the portrait, with the springiness of her pinned-up hair and the rendered softness of her cheeks.
