Self-Portrait

Edgar Fernhout, 1937

Captivated by Renaissance painting, Fernhout created this self-portrait in Alassio on the Italian Riviera. For the background, he used a strict horizontal and vertical division of planes. His mother critically called this ‘Mondrianism,’ referring to the paintings by her friend Piet Mondrian. Remarkably, she had also made such a partitioning of the picture plane in her Self Portrait with Flowers (adjacent).
