Explanatory note

  • Dit monster werd gedurende enkele maanden in zeewater gedompeld, zonder dat de metalen er enige aanvreting van ondervonden. Het Franse pantserkorvet La Belliqueuse, dat drie jaar in de Stille Zuidzee zou vertoeven, werd op deze manier gekoperd. Het monster werd verkregen door tussenkomst van de Nederlandse consul in Toulon Dhr. Jouve.

Entry

Sample of armour plate covered on both sides with three layers: an unidentified material, a layer of lead and a layer of copper. The layers are clenched to the armour plate.

This sample was submerged in seawater for several months without any deterioration of the metals. The French armoured corvette La Belliqueuse was then coppered in this way, in preparation for a three-year commission in the Pacific Ocean. The sample was obtained from Mr Jouve, the Dutch consul in Toulon.
