Sammy’s Bar

Lisette Model, 1944

Lisette Model is one of the many photographers who took raw, unvarnished photographs of people in the street, cafes, and other urban spots from the 1930s. When she emigrated from Paris to the United States in 1938, she found new and rewarding subject matter in New York. She was a regular at Sammy’s Bar, where she photographed both the performers and the patrons.
