Saint Vitus

Vitus was a 4th-century Sicilian boy who endured barbaric forms of torture after his conversion to Christianity. The cruellest of these was to be boiled, aged twelve, in a cauldron of oil, resin and pitch. Miraculously, he survived, thanks to his unwavering faith. Depicting Vitus in a cauldron was very popular during the Middle Ages, especially in southern Germany.

    De heilige Vitus zit gehurkt in de ketel met het bovenlijf iets gedraaid en de handen in biddende houding. Hij houdt het hoofd schuin opzij in de richting van de linkerschouder, de blik is naar beneden gericht en het gezicht vertoont een gelaten uitdrukking. De linkerknie steekt boven de ketel uit, die een bolle wand met opstaande rand heeft. In de handen van de heilige, en in de rand van de ketel, bevinden zich respectievelijk één en twee gaten.
