Saint Ursula and her Virgins

The Christian princess Ursula was murdered by Huns near Cologne together with her retinue of 11,000 virginal handmaidens. Some of them seek protection under Ursula’s gown in this sculpture. The saint is dressed as a well-to-do lady in the high fashion of the day: with a braided linen headdress and a ‘guimpe’ (a thin chemisette worn under a low-necked dress).

De heilige staat met het gewicht op haar linkerbeen en het rechter schuin naar voren geplaatst op een met gras begroeid grondje. Ze leest in een buidelboek, dat zij in de linkerhand houdt. In haar andere hand hield ze waarschijnlijk een pijl. Aan haar voeten staan in twee groepen, van drie en van vier, haar gezellinnen. De twee buitenste figuren trekken de slippen van Ursula's mantel om zich heen. Rechtsachteraan houdt zich een zevende figuur schuil. Ursula draagt een japon met een vierkante halsuitsnijding, waaronder het geplooide hemd te zien is; om het middel een sjaal. Op het lange, golvende haar een baret, die versierd is met twee rijen kralen en een grote veer. De gezellinnen dragen ongeveer gelijke japonnen. De vrouw geheel rechts in de linkergroep heeft een hoofdtooi van gevlochten takken.
