Saint Nicholas Saving a Hanged Man

attributed to Zanobi di Jacopo Machiavelli, c. 1470

The panel depicts one of the many miracles of Saint Nicholas, whose charity is still widely celebrated on 5 December. It was originally a redella (a small panel at the base of an altarpiece) that formed part of a triptych devoted to the saint in the church of Santo Spirito in Florence.

Description
De heilige Nicolaas van Tolentino redt een gehangene van de galg. Tegen de galg staat een ladder. Links en rechts groepen van vier toekijkende soldaten. Links een ommuurde stad met een openstaande poort, rechts op de achtergrond een andere stad. Het paneel vormde waarschijnlijk de predella van een altaarstuk.
