Saint Clare

Saint Clare is reading the Bible, bathed in light. Also known as ‘the luminous one,’ Saint Clare was a 13th-century Italian nun who devoted herself to spirituality and renounced all earthly possessions. She gained a vast following and was canonized just four days after her death. The painter Court chose not to depict her in a habit, instead inventing a medievalinspired version of her clothing and hairstyle.

    De heilige Clara leest de Bijbel, badend in licht. Clara, ook wel ‘de lichtende’ genoemd, was een 13de-eeuwse Italiaanse non die leefde zonder bezit en spiritualiteit centraal stelde. Ze kreeg veel volgelingen en werd al vier dagen na haar dood heilig verklaard. De schilder Court koos ervoor haar niet in een habijt af te beelden, maar verzon zelf een middeleeuwse versie van haar kleding en haarstijl. Dit schilderij werd eerder foutief gezien als portret van Clémence de Vernède, gravin de Corneillan en vanaf haar huwelijk in 1864 barones de Pagès (1818-1901) als de heilige Catharina.
