Sabre (kastane)

This silver sabre (kastane) was part of a group of six Sinhalese weapons from the Rijksmuseum’s collection that were returned to Sri Lanka by the Dutch State in 2023. After conducting joint provenance research, it was concluded that these weapons were captured by Dutch troops during the siege of the city of Kandy in Sri Lanka in 1765. Hence, there was involuntary loss of possession, prompting the restitution of these objects. The sabre and the other weapons are now on display at the Colombo National Museum.

Description
Sabel met een massief zilveren gevest in de vorm van een drakenkop met twee stenen als ogen, pareerstang met drie drakenkoppen en een voorbeugel met griffioenkop en een bodhisattva. Decoratie Ceylonees, vorm van gevest en kling Europees. Bloedgeul bedekt met zilveren rankenrand. Houten schede geheel bedekt met zilveren plaat, die versierd is met ranken eindigend in een krul; vier draagogen.

Explanatory note

De kastane werd samen met een andere kastane, een Piha-kaetta en een kanon in 1765 door de Nederlanders buitgemaakt bij de verovering van het paleis van de koning van Kandy. De kastane wordt genoemd in de boedelbeschrijving van Baron van Eck, opgemaakt na zijn dood in 1765. [Sint Nicolaas 2008]. Gerestitueerd object. Op 28 augustus 2023 tekende demissionair staatssecretaris Uslu voor Cultuur in Sri Lanka de eigendomsoverdracht van dit object. Vanaf die datum was het object in bruikleen van de Democratische Socialistische Republiek Sri Lanka. Op 28 november 2023 vond het transport naar Sri Lanka plaats.
