Rue d’Enghien, Paris

Arend Hendriks (signed by artist), 1911 - 1931

In the late 1920s Arend Hendriks recorded the Parisian Rue d’Enghien by night. The light from the streetlamps is whimsically reflected in the wet surface of the narrow street. The distorted way in which the buildings are depicted, together with the many diagonal lines in the composition, suggest rapid motion. It is as if Hendriks has captured the scene from a speeding vehicle.
