Two women with a dog. Japan, 17th century Ink and colours on paper. In the early 17th century a middle class was developing in Japan. They became major patrons of the arts. This changed the nature of art. New themes became popular in prints as well as in paintings, often based on everyday life. One popular subject was the pet dog looking up to its owner, as shown here. These European dogs had been introduced to Japan by the Portuguese.
