Getting started with the collection:
Roemer
anonymous, c. 1650 - c. 1700
In the 16th and 17th centuries, grisaille decorations were mainly painted on stained glass. This kind of monochrome decoration is much rarer on ‘hollow glass,’ such as this roemer. Here we see Neptune being pulled through the waves in his sea chariot, a scene portraying a passage from the myth of Aeneas. The ruler of the sea calms the storm so that Aeneas and his companions can reach the shore safely.
