Portable altar with Bishamonten. Japan. 19th century. Wood with polychromy and gold. This portable altar contains a statue of Bishamonten: guardian of the north, one of the four corners of the earth. As protector of the faith and conqueror of evil, he tramples two monsters underfoot. Shown on the inside of the doors are his two assistants: Kichijôten and Zennishi. Westendorp bequest.
