Red square with eight knifes

Jan Roeland, c. 1980

In his paintings, Jan Roeland always balances on the border of abstraction. Eight stylized knifes around the red square are reminiscent of the covered table which formed the original inspiration for this painting. But unavoidable is also the reminder of the famous Red Square (1915) by the Russian avant-garde painter Kasimir Malevich, a benchmark in the history of abstract painting.
