Rebecca at the Well and the Meeting of Rebecca and Isaac

Johannes Lutma (1624-1689) (mentioned on object), c. 1654

Lutma was famous for his history scenes in silver, which could rival painted images. He suggested figures emerging out of the dark by partially roughening the surface. The scenes represented here are metaphors for marriage. The image of Rebecca at the well stood for a wife’s obedience to her husband. In the meeting of Rebecca and Isaac, she symbolizes conjugal bliss.
