Getting started with the collection:
Railway from Kanagawa to Yokohama
anonymous, 1872 - 1874
Both Antoon and Albert visited Yokohama several times. Albert also lived there during his last three years in Japan. As in Nagasaki, he served as the Nederlandse Handel-Maatschappij’s agent and as a consul there. Japan’s first railway was laid between Yokohama and Tokyo and taken into use in 1872. By then, Antoon was back in the Netherlands already, so Albert must have brought this photo home with him.
