Landscape with Two Altars or Beacons

Adriaan de Weerdt, 1510 - 1571

From contemporary sources, we know that De Weerdt was trained as a landscape painter. Yet this signed drawing is his only known work in that genre. Leafy trees flank the composition. In the middle, a winding path, drawn in undulating lines, leads towards a village. The path is marked on the left and right by beacons, from which flames and smoke billow, further enlivening the scene.
