Quintus Fabius Maximus Meeting his Son on Foot

David Vinckboons, c. 1608 - c. 1609

This is the right half of a drawing. The man at the left is Quintus Fabius Maximus visiting his son, the consul of Rome. The father has arrived on horseback and is ordered by his son to dismount, for a civilian must approach a consul on foot. The father, who was only testing his son, instantly obeys. The young consul and his retinue can be seen in the left half of the drawing, which is in the Pierpont Morgan Library, New York.
