Pyramus and Thisbe
Magdalena van de Passe, c. 1636 - 1670
The myths depicted here are of two ill-fated love affairs. Adonis, the lover of the goddess Venus, was attacked by a boar while hunting. Pyramus lashed out when he thought his beloved Thisbe had been killed by a lion. Magdalena de Passe depicted the grief of the lovers left behind with a sense of drama. Adonis’ hound also weeps.
