Pygmalion and Galatea

In 1783 and 1784 the Parisian dealer Jean-Baptiste Lefebvre bought examples of this group on a blue base from the manufactory at Sèvres. They were almost certainly intended for buyers in Amsterdam.

    Pygmalion knielt met de handen ineen geslagen voor de naakte Galatea die op hem neerkijkt. Achter haar zweven twee putti op wolken. De groep is geplaatst op een donkerblauwe losse sokkel met gouden banden. Op de sokkel is een plaquette aangebracht met de tekst: Si Pigmalion la forma,/ Si le Ciel anima son etre./ L'Amour fit plus, il l'enflamma,/ Sans lui que serviroit de naitre.
