Putto with a Dolphin

attributed to Edme Bouchardon, c. 1750

After studying in Rome for ten years, Bouchardon settled in Paris and became one of the city’s leading sculptors. He specialized, among other things, in sculpture for fountains. This elegant model for one such fountain sculpture is attributed to him on the basis of the subject and its Roman-inspired style.

  • Description

    Op een rotsachtige bodem met waterplanten staat de putto met gespreide benen boven een dorfijn in welke richting hij zijn harpoen stoot, die hij met beide handen vasthoudt. Het hoofd met naar achteren wapperend haar is driekwart naar rechts en schuin naar beneden gewend. Een mantel hangt van zijn rechterschouder omlaag en bedekt gedeeltelijk rug en schaamte. De staart van de dolfijn steekt achter de putto omhoog; de karikaturaal gevormde kop met geopende bek vertoont baardje, grote snor en opstaande wenkbrauwen. openingen in bek en neusgaten voor waterstralen.
