Getting started with the collection:
Pour nous deux
Henri Matisse, 1946 - 1972
The facial features in this portrait have been reduced to their bare essentials: the eyes consist of only two lines and a circle. The placement, thickness and direction of the lines are crucial and can express a whole gamut of emotions, as well as depth. Matisse even determined the lighting by varying the thickness of the lines, or eliminating them altogether, as for instance here at the bridge of the nose.
