Poster Der Buchdruck (Letterpress Printing)

Niklaus Stoecklin, 1922

Besides being a painter, Niklaus Stoecklin was also a prolific poster designer. One of his earliest designs was this poster for the applied arts museum in his home town of Basel. Stoecklin opted for a dynamic close-up, in which letterpress printing is represented by means of a piece of sans-serif printer’s type together with its impression. It made a powerful image of an age-old craft that was radically modernized in the 1920s.
