Portrait of a Woman

Erwin Blumenfeld, c. 1933 - c. 1936

Before making a career for himself as a fashion photographer in Paris and New York, Blumenfeld worked in Amsterdam for several years. His enthusiasm for modern visual means – such as close-ups and a high or a low vantage point – was not universally shared. In 1932 a Dutch photography magazine branded his photographs as the ‘shoddy work’ of a novice.
