Getting started with the collection:
Portrait of the Poetess Elisabeth Wolff
Ludwig Gottlieb Portman (mentioned on object), 1805
When the Dutch Patriot movement is crushed in 1787, many of its leaders flee to France. In 1788, Wolff and Deken also leave the country. They settle in Trévoux, near Lyon, until they are forced to return to the Netherlands in 1797 for financial reasons. They spend their last years in poverty. Wolff dies after a long illness on 5 November 1804, Deken a mere nine days thereafter. One year later, these portraits are published.
