Portrait of the Movie Star Lil Dagover

Fifo-Studio (mentioned on object), 1930

Berlin was an important centre of the film industry in the interbellum. Large film production companies, such as the UFA, produced many films, year after year. Lil Dagover was one of the most famous German movie stars around 1930. The handwritten text on this photograph suggests that she gave it to a fan. Then, as now, photographs of movie stars were distributed in large numbers to increase their reputation and popularity.
