Portrait of an Unknown Woman

Lorenzo Bartolini, c. 1825

Bartolini was an innovator in Italian sculpture. He broke with the then-current tradition of using the art of Classical antiquity as a model. This modest portrait was directly inspired by a famous Italian Renaissance sculpture of a woman (from around 1475), who holds her hands to her chest this way. Bartolini’s modern style made him a very popular portraitist for the European beau monde.

Description
Buste van een jonge vrouw ten halven lijve, het hoofd naar links gewend. Ze is gekleed in een laag uitgesneden, nauwsluitende jurk die de schouders grotendeels vrijlaat en op de bovenarmen met knopen wordt vastgehouden. Eroverheen draagt ze een omslagdoek die van de rug over haar linkerarm is getrokken. Haar rechterarm is vrij en houdt een boeket bloemen tussen haar borsten geklemd. De buste staat op een losse, ronde geprofileerde voet.
