Eva Watson-Schütze obtained a painterly effect in this portrait by using a soft focus. This aesthetic is characteristic of Pictorialism, a movement within photography. Women had more opportunities to develop in this movement and photography in general than in the established art forms. The handheld camera was easier to use and afforded greater freedom than painting or watercolour.
