Portrait of a man in samurai armor

attributed to Felice Beato, c. 1863 - c. 1870

Though many pictures of Japanese subjects were made for western buyers, most were not portraits of individuals with names and identities, but ‘types’ conforming to the stereotyped image many westerners had of Japan. In the Bauduin collection we find both types and true portraits, from samurai in full armour to Japanese men the brothers knew personally.
